The Buyer is responsible for creating an exciting and timely product assortment for the Women s UO Owned Brand business in China, that meets or exceeds the sales volume and profits for their department. They are to execute the vision of the China UO Women s vision and intuitively respond to customer feedback and market trends. In addition, this person must develop action plans that drive category specific growth and increase profitability. The Buyer is responsible for the success of their business unit and is expected to use their fashion intuition to direct the assortment of their category.


  • Based in Philadelphia / UO Navy Yard HQ, represent the China Women s UO Owned Brands assortment in all relevant product buying, planning, and related processes. Ensure the China assortment of UO Owned Brands comes together in a cohesive manner to reflect the strategy and needs of the China Women s customer.
  • Be the voice of the China Women s Own Brand apparel business within the Navy Yard HQ product teams, building relationships with key product partners to ensure a relevant offering for the China customer.
  • Analyze (either directly or with the staff) weekly and monthly China Owned Brand sales, stock and on-order with the goal of optimizing sales and minimizing markdowns.
  • Recognize and react quickly to all trends, both major and minor, in the business, whether product or store related.
  • Work with the Buying Team and Planning Manager on revising plans to ensure that sales and margin are optimized by class. Continually create newness in to add freshness to Owned Brands assortment. Suggest China-relevant category extensions for further growth.
  • Ensure that buying direction is on target based on partnering with China team and comprehensive analysis of the business, e.g., last year results, current trends, etc.
  • Manage the financial elements of the business, e.g., OTB, IMU, MD s, etc. for assigned classes
  • Manage styles to the plan, ensuring that each item is a winner and that the assortment is properly balanced and invested by ensuring there is an appropriate balance of looks, silhouettes, fabrics, patterns, color, price points, etc., and that we are taking the correct inventory position with key items and fringe and/or new items.
  • Work with Designer(s) and Production to manage the timeline on all product development.
  • Qualifications

  • An understanding of the customer s wants and needs and the ability to identify the appropriate product/trend that will appeal to the customer and exceed their expectations.
  • A curiosity about China/Asia customers and ability to translate new learnings into relevant insights for the Navy Yard HQ team.
  • The ability to conceptually plan assortments that meet financial objectives.
  • The ability to prioritize tasks and the ability to balance the immediate and long term needs of the business.
  • The ability to collect, assimilate, analyze, package and present information to the cross functional leadership team in a way that permits them to make an informed decision and take measurable action.
  • The ability to recognize a new trend, item, look, fabrication/technique early in its lifecycle.
  • Use creative thinking as an asset in recognizing and managing in changing paradigms.
  • An understanding of the Urban Outfitters customer and the shopping experience and that it is the final category edit for the merchandising assortment. The buyer has to possess the ability to identify, gather and assimilate information specific to our customer.
  • The ability to make the transition from strategic (conceptual and planning) to execution. Financial acumen and the ability to manipulate numbers are critical in achieving the tactical objectives.
  • Leadership skills to build and develop a solid team of individuals that share a common vision and understanding of the Company.
  • The ability to develop partnerships with other Buyers, Directors and Department heads.
  • Four-year degree in Fashion or Business preferred
  • 5+ years of buying with a retailer
  • Education

    Bachelor s Degree in Fashion, Business, or a related field.
