Requisition Number: 18272 Location: Boulder, Colorado Employment Type: Research Faculty Schedule: Full-Time Close All Job Summary The Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Sciences (CIRES) at the University of Colorado in Boulder has an immediate opening for an early or mid-level career Space Weather Data Scientist working with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) National Centers for Environmental Information (NCEI). NCEI is a globally recognized repository and provider of long-term geophysical, space weather, and marine data. This position is located within NCEI?s Solar and Terrestrial Physics (STP) branch. STP is responsible for data stewardship and product development for space weather instruments on satellites including the Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellites (GOES), the Polar-orbiting Operational Environmental Satellites (POES), the Defense Meteorological Satellite Program (DMSP), and the Deep Space Climate Observatory (DSCOVR).CIRES is looking for an early or mid-career level physical scientist or computer scientist with experience managing large data sets, developing novel user interfaces and data service, automating processing pipelines, describing data with standard metadata, and maintaining relational database systems. The successful candidate will be part of a team that processes and stewards satellite space weather data, serving global data users by providing discovery and access for data and derived scientific products. Data management at NCEI is focused on standards-based commercial and in-house data management tools, including relational database management systems that drive web services. The current position will support data users in NOAA?s Space Weather Prediction Center, academia, the Air Force, and many international organizations. The ideal candidate will develop improved scientific and data management products, and increase collaboration and coordination for data acquisition, management, and sharing.This position is located in the David Skaggs Research Center, 325 Broadway, Boulder, Colorado. NCEI is a part of the US Department of Commerce, NOAA, National Environmental Satellite, Data, and Information Service (NESDIS). NCEI?s mission is to provide scientific stewardship of and timely access to global environmental data from satellites and other sources to promote, protect, and enhance the Nation?s economy, security against extreme weather, environmental intelligence, and quality of life. Our vision is to be instrumental in ensuring a sustainable future environment by advancing scientific and societal understanding of the Earth system.National Centers for Environmental Information (NCEI) is responsible for preserving, monitoring, assessing, and providing public access to the Nation's treasure of geophysical data and information.What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be Facilitate the ingest and archive of data collected by NOAA satellites and other space-weather observation platforms.Populate online databases and create websites to enable discovery of and access to space weather data products.Identify ways to improve/enhance ingest and access systems and assist in implementing these changes.Develop data-quality monitoring solutions.Document data and procedures in ISO standard metadata format to drive big data discovery services.Monitor, report and implement scientific and technological changes impacting the data repository and services.Assist researchers and the public regarding NOAA?s space weather data.Understand technological advances and best practices in data stewardship and data sciences.Collaborate with space weather team to preserve and disseminate data.Maintain a basic understanding of the science data in the archive. What We Require Bachelor's Degree in Space Science, Computer Science, Informatics, or a related field with 2+ years applicable experience managing data.Experience using programming languages such as Python, JavaScript, or Bash to automate processing and implement new services.Experience working in a Linux/Unix environment.U.S. Citizenship or Permanent Resident status. What We Would Like You To Have Familiarity with solar-terrestrial physics and/or space weather.Familiarity with metadata and data exchange standards, e.g., NetCDF, ISO, XML, JSON.Experience with data acquisition, processing, monitoring, plotting, and visualization.Experience with relational databases and SQL.Experience using cloud-based services to set up and maintain scalable and reliable user interfaces.Experience with creating or editing technical documentation and agreements.A strong desire to learn and apply new skills and technologies in a rapidly evolving environment.
