Position Reports To: Facility Rehabilitation Director

Job Summary:

To assist in providing quality patient care while maintaining positive levels of interaction with facilities and clients, under the direction of a licensed or registered Physical Therapist. Adheres to applicable state regulation concerning physical therapy.

Essential Functions*:
  • Under the direction of the licensed/certified physical therapist, optimizes physical abilities and skills of patients in facilities by: assisting in protocols of screening; implementing treatment for all assigned patients; delivering treatment to achieve identified objectives according to the established treatment plan; accurately documenting progress toward objectives; and communicating patient status and needs to the patient, the patient's family, the staff, the supervising Physical Therapist, and other professionals as appropriate.
  • Builds a strong rehabilitation care practice within each facility by: establishing and maintaining courteous and helpful interaction patterns with staff, patients and families which reflects sensitivity to individual needs and a problem solving approach; contributing to facility patient care, utilization review, administrative staff/department head, and family conference activities/communications as directed by the physical therapist; establishing and maintaining good working relationships with other health care professionals and colleagues in the community; maintaining awareness of change in patient populations, patient conditions and programs and keeping the licensed or registered physical therapist informed directly and in a timely manner, or patient progress and facility issues; adhering to the requirements of the patient's Bill of Rights; adhering to established facility policies and procedures related to environment safety, orderliness, risk management, infection control and emergency situations.
  • Continue professional development by expanding and enhancing clinical expertise, professional and management skills through interaction with managers, therapists and other professional staff, self-study, and other continuing education activities; maintaining valid state license/registration/certification (where appropriate); obtaining membership and participating in professional and community organizations; maintaining awareness of issues related to the profession of physical therapy and the health care environment.
  • Maintain administration requirements by: submitting billing, payroll and expense documentation in an accurate and timely manner, assisting in collection of statistics and updating records; informing appropriate staff and managers of patient progress and facility issues; and contributing to facility rehab goals and plans.
  • Understand managed care/Prospective Payment System (PPS) billing and treatment guidelines. Provide quality care as well as reasonable goals and outcomes within the guidelines.
  • Comply with infection control procedures and environment safety protocol within a facility. Must embrace the team concept and interdisciplinary care.
  • Ability to travel between facilities efficiently during scheduled hours.
  • Ability to work varying hours, including weekends and holidays.
  • Maintain confidentiality of Premier Therapy, facility and patient information.
  • Performs other duties or special projects as assigned; this description is not intended to be all-inclusive.
  • If working in a school environment, must be aware and compliant with IEP (Individualized Education Plan) process for treating school-aged children.

  • Required Credentials:
  • Graduate of an APTA approved school for Physical Therapy Assistants.
  • Valid state license/registration/certification (where appropriate).
  • Valid driver's license.

  • Physical Requirements:
  • Ability to lift patients using appropriate biomechanical techniques frequently throughout the course of a work day/shift; must be capable of easily lifting fifty (50) pounds of dead weight alone.
  • Ability to walk, bend, stand and reach constantly during the work day/shift.
  • Visual, auditory and speaking skills sufficient to evaluate, diagnose, communicate, and monitor patient needs, and to maintain accurate records, recognize people and provide and understand written, verbal and gestural communications.
  • Ability to push wheeled equipment throughout the facility and in the community.
  • Fine motor skills for legible and accurate writing of reports, charting, scheduling, daily correspondence, and presentations.
  • Fine motor skills for effective and efficient handling of diagnostic or therapeutic equipment.
  • Ability to participate in sustained activity for many hours in duration in accordance with state labor laws.
