GENERAL DESCRIPTION The Director of Intellectual Property will work closely with the company's internal teams and external patent counsel overseeing the Company ??s intellectual property portfolio. This position will assist in evaluating the patentability of innovations, prepare, draft and file patent applications in conjunction with our external IP counsel working closely with internal departments. This position will perform research and analysis and provide guidance on a variety of patent and IP-related issues and act as liaison for interdepartmental initiatives. ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES Identify and execute IP strategies to protect the Company ??s intellectual property assets and facilitate Company goals; maintain a solid understanding of the Company ??s products, business, goals and challenges. Develop intellectual property policy and procedure. Identify internal inventions that may be patentable. Conduct and participate in invention related research meetings. Develop patent procedures for inventions, products or unique projects and best practices, taking into account relevant third party contractual obligations. Coordinate and collaborate with inventors and the R&D/process teams to generate patent applications. Coordinate and manage outside counsel with regard to patent applications and issues. Manage the Company ??s global trademark portfolio as well as outside trademark counsel. Educate top management, inventors and R&D/process team on patent systems and procedures. Review, assess and evaluate purchase of patents or patent licensing from third party offers. Review patent issues in Company transactions/ ie. mergers and acquisitions. Maintain and manage database relating to all patent procedures and processes. Ensure compliance of foreign, local, state and federal laws relating to patent issues. Conduct prior art database searches for patentability and freedom to operate analyses; analyze patent and scientific papers and documents to assist. Conduct patentability and freedom to operate assessments, and provide legal opinions related thereto. Education/Experience: Ph.D. (molecular/cell biology, biochemistry, medical science, immunology, etc.) and 3-5 years of previous patent prosecution experience are required. A strong scientific background Must be registered with the USPTO as a Patent Agent Must possess global trademark experience Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Excellent interpersonal skills including the ability to develop effective working relationships and networks with culturally and technically diverse groups. Ability to work collaboratively with other Legal group members and with R&D, and successfully manage outside counsel. Excellent oral and written communication skills Highly attentive to detail Ability to analyze complex technical data Excellent organizational skills and ability to multitask PC skills (email, word-processing, spreadsheets, etc.) Ability to adapt in a fast-paced setting with evolving goals and objectives Ability to think critically, analyze problems and provide creative solutions Ability to manage projects, prioritize responsibilities, and deliver a full range of results under tight time constraints.
