Job Title: Product Development Manager Department: Product Development Job Description:Manage the development of a product from rough art to approved sales sample at the required margins.Mastery of component development ?? learning aspects of product development ?? including candy, packaging, labeling, assembly, duties, product safety, and costing.Modify existing product as needed to provide a ??new? look for sales presentationsWork with overseas vendors and internal departments.Collaborates with Licensing, Sales, and Marketing as needed to bring closure to items.Manage the daily activity and work quality of a small team of Product Developers, seasonally or by commodity/category. Specific Position Outcomes:When rough art is turned over do an estimated Bill of Material (test or comp KIT). This will include all cost elements that can affect the product. Using this information, provide Design direction for size, colors, and complexity that they should follow for final artWhen the final design (approved art) is turned over to Product Development send the art to the selected vendor(s). This will include detail specifications, price goals and schedules.Obtain pricing on carry over items & develop PD issues without design work.Work with each vendor to get approved counter-samples and pricing.Recommend solutions as needed to meet reliability, safety, packaging issues as well as to minimize total costs as practical. This should include all cost elements: product price, duty, freight, molds, packaging etc.Set up samples for internal approvals by the marketing/product line managerMake recommendations for changes to product size, construction, packaging, or candy as applicable to meet the margin & design objectives. Assure that lines close on time to meet customer deadlines. Provide status reports to the Department manager as requiredProvide Sample room with a signed off kit of new items so that they can order the items immediately upon item approval. Other deliverables:Make sure all required information on KITS are accurateMake sure product files are complete with quotes from vendors (component sheets) as well as any other information needed to complete final costing.Negotiate price and product specifications with vendorsBe highly knowledgeable in material characteristics (ceramic, acrylic, plush, etc)Be generally knowledgeable in market trends, especially as it affects the assigned lineWork with other departments to help configure product correctly: Packaging, Samples, Design, Quoting for final pricingCommunicate with vendors all pricing, design and engineering issues required to complete each product.Be familiar with product and corporate product history to provide guidelines for the future.
