Title: _ _ Data Science Liaison

The Center for Forensic Science Research and Education (CFSRE) ( www.forensicscienceeducation.org ) at the Fredric Rieders Family Foundation (FRFF) is an international leader in forensic science research, conducting projects for the US Department of Justice, Customs and Border Protection, the National Institute of Justice, the National Institutes for Health, and others. The CFSRE also supports forensic science education programs, courses, and seminars at the high school, graduate and post-professional continuing education level. We operate a facility with state-of-the-art analytical instrumentation dedicated to the support of our educational and research mission. Available analytical equipment includes genetic analyzers and sequencers, DNA quantification, HPLC, GCMS, HS-GCMS, LCMSMS, LCQTOF, and many other techniques. CFSRE works on various projects in collaboration with NMS Labs, the nation's leading independent provider of professional laboratory testing services, specializing in forensic science, clinical toxicology, and other vitally important areas of esoteric testing and expert services, and offers opportunities for collaboration to Foundation staff.

The Foundation is seeking a regular, full-time, Data Science Liaisonto join the staff.


The person in this position is responsible for collection, curation and management of data regarding drug testing (e.g. drugs of abuse detection, opioid overdose data, drug use demographic information, drug trend data, etc.) and generating reports and/or models based on the data for rapid public dissemination. In addition, the person will be creating data archives of clinical and forensic drug testing data, employing data analytics, building or implementing tools for its analysis and display, including content for open-access externally facing web portals, and the creation of content for scientific presentations and publications. This individual also works closely with toxicologists and laboratory scientists to understand their business needs in terms of identifying trends and patterns in data. In addition, they will work with external stakeholders in translating data into actionable information in support of public health and safety.

Education and Experience

Minimum of a Masters degree in data science, epidemiology, biostatistics, bioanalytics,

Coursework in chemistry, or toxicology preferred.

2+ years of experience in the procurement, curation, organization and analysis of large sets of data.(internships included)

2+ years of experience with report generation and report writing, as writing skills are essential. Experience in a healthcare environment is preferred. (Internships included)

Experience in the use of R, Python, SQL, Shiny, Jira and other data/performance management tools is preferred. Data types include raw machine data requiring processing into useable information; and analysis of population data regarding trends in alcohol and drug use.

Strong competency in building user interfaces, dashboards for data display and web publication are preferred.

Candidates must have experience using a variety of data mining/data analysis methods, using a variety of data tools, building and implementing models, using/creating algorithms.

Major Duties and Responsibilities

  • Develop reporting systems for novel drug identifications, trends, and public health/safety aspects.
  • Develop network of personnel including public health, public safety, law enforcement, scientists, clinicians, etc.
  • Maintain large Excel spreadsheet
  • Maintain regular communication with collaborators
  • Monitoring data trends and developing novel approach for data analysis/curation
  • Develop a high level of competence in understanding the strengths and limitations of various data sets and platforms related to healthcare information.
  • Work with Information technology partners inside the organization to acquire and update and curate, and maintain datasets for business and academic analytics
  • Mine and analyze data from stakeholder databases to drive optimization and improvement of product development, marketing techniques, testing menus and meeting customer needs
  • Develop custom data models and algorithms to apply to data sets.
  • Use predictive modeling to improve public health and safety outcomes tailored to stakeholder needs.
  • Liaise with data scientists in partner agencies to ensure alignment of data services
  • Develop processes and tools to monitor and analyze model performance and data accuracy.
  • Data mining using state-of-the-art methods
  • Extend companys data with third party sources of information when needed
  • Enhance data collection procedures to include information that is relevant for building analytic systems
  • Process, cleanse, and verify the integrity of data used for analysis
  • Conduct ad-hoc analysis and presenting results in a clear manner
  • Learn the business data needs of coroners, medical examiners, and public health agencies, e.g. CDC
  • Represent the Fredric Rieders Family Foundation and the Center for Forensic Science Research and Education at various professional meetings
  • Maintain r egular and reliable attendance
  • Other duties as assigned

  • Knowledge of proper safety practices

Physical Demands

  • Ability to talk, hear, stand, reach with hands and arms, and use hands and fingers to manipulate instrument/equipment controls, computer keyboard, office equipment, objects, or tools
  • Moving from one work location to another to sit and stand, sometimes for extended periods of time
  • Vision (with correction) including color, distance, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus
