Finch is unlocking the therapeutic potential of the microbiome via a human-first drug discovery platform. The Head of Data Science will report to the VP of Research and lead a diverse team of computational scientists and data engineers to envision, design and execute computational strategies to address Finch’s broad research and development objectives. Your group functions in a matrix organization, supporting Program Leads in multiple disease areas, as well as supporting development of the Research and Development platforms at Finch, but the responsibility for setting the scientific trajectory and methodological development of computational analyses largely resides within your group.
Responsibilities Build infrastructure, methods, and a scientific plan to generate and integrate high-throughput molecular data (metagenomics, genomics, metabolomics, etc.) collected from clinical trials, observational studies, in vitro screens and microbiology databases, towards the goals of creating rationally designed microbial therapeutics. Triage priorities across research programs, pre-program areas, and development in a matrixed environment where you are jointly responsible for scoping the biological questions and well as methods and interpretation. Drive development of new algorithmic approaches to statistical modeling of the microbiome. Work closely with our bench scientists to plan high throughput data generation and analysis in support of discovery process and product decision making. Lead strategic decisions around how to develop and maintain our computational discovery platform including software, databases, and computing hardware, ensuring scalability and interoperability between its components. Proactively plan improvements to the Finch discovery platform with statistical/quantitative/computational analysis, even in areas and applications where not explicitly directed to do so. Evaluate new technologies, tool, and collaborations for high throughput data generation and analysis to address the broader research goals of Finch. Support both existing drug development programs as well as help evaluate new indication areas and build out analytical strategies for nascent programs. Integrate with clinical trial design to ensure donor selection, sample collection and other critical design components support downstream data analysis, discovery, and product development efforts. Flexibly adapt mentoring and management practices to accommodate diverse technical backgrounds and experience levels. Represent the company both internally and externally with the scientific and business communities. Attract and develop a world-class team of computational scientists and build a culture of innovation that fosters teamwork and optimizes performance. Qualifications PhD in Computational Biology or related discipline 8 - 10 years of data science experience in life sciences, with 2+ years in biopharmaceutical research Academic or professional background in NGS analysis, microbiology, evolution, ecology, genomics Understanding of theory and practice of machine learning and statistical modeling Understanding of theory and hands-on experience with a broad range of current bioinformatics and computational biology tools, methods, and applications Proven leadership skills with ability to innovate and collaborate; experience managing PhD scientists in a drug discovery setting Strong scientific communication of conclusions drawn from large, complex datasets Ability to work in a fast-paced matrix environment with cross-functional teams and competing priorities
