The principle duties and responsibilities of the Police Officer include but are not limited to: enforces federal and appropriate state criminal codes and the Department of Veterans Affairs regulations in the physical protection of patients, members, visitors, and employees; protects the property of the United States government and personal property on medical center grounds; protects the civil rights of all individuals while on federally owned property; applies proficiency in crowd control, bomb threat and search organization procedures; employs police skills and knowledge in gathering and preserving evidence, questioning witnesses and principals, and preparing reports or preliminary investigation; exercises skill in meeting and dealing with physically and mentally ill patients, visitors, employees, vendors, juveniles and unruly persons; utilizes knowledge and skill in rules of search and seizure, obtainment of search and arrest warrants, advising the arrested of their constitutional rights, and in transporting and transferring arrested persons to appropriate authorities for detention; observes, stops and questions suspicious persons authoritatively and tactfully; responds to reports of crime-in-progress, conducts crime scene assessments and intervenes to abort criminal acts or to investigate and initiate appropriate actions; issues traffic citations and federal violations notices; directs and assists persons to safety areas, taking prompt action to evacuate persons from dangerous areas, during fire, storm, or other emergencies; performs duties as a shift coordinator ensuring completion of journals, police reports and posting of officers.
