The State Parks Director directs the overall policy, financial and business management, customer service, hospitality, and ecological and operational management of an expanding state park system. This position represents the department by serving on and/or working with pubic and other external groups involved in the promotion of land conservation and outdoor recreation. These include but are not limited to elected official, environmental groups, the tourism industry, federal, state and local outdoor recreation agencies and private partners. This position develops strategic planning initiatives, annual program objectives, budgeting needs, business plans, marketing strategies, staffing needs, legislative requests, and administrative code changes.. Minimum Qualifications. The successful candidate will demonstrate experience developing innovative programs and leveraging public-private partnerships as well as other resources demanded by an established and ever-expanding state park system. Demonstrable experience successfully leading large, diverse organization in a dynamic, customer focused environment. Knowledge of state and local government organization and ability to deal effectively with the legislature, government officials, private sector, nongovernmental organization and the general public. Knowledge of budgeting and financial management processes sufficient to ensure funds are property administered, needs are accurately assessed and represented, expenditures of funds are appropriate, and budget proposal are effectively developed and articulated.. Preferred Qualifications. Bachelor's degree or higher in park/recreation management, natural or cultural resources management, natural science, business/public administration, hospitality management, or a closely related field. Working knowledge of park operational and ecological management, customer service, visitor services and interpretive program management, law enforcement and public safety, planning, design and construction. Experience effectively engaging diverse groups and stakeholders, including persons with disabilities, and underrepresented communities. Considerable skills across all aspects of administering nature-based public service programs. Progressively responsible administrative or management experience representing a large complex organization to government agencies, businesses, community organizations and the media. Experience building and maintaining a high-performing team?fostering an environment of trust, collaboration, and innovation.. Special Requirements. This position requires extensive overnight and weekend travel. The completion of a Statement of Economic Interest (SOEI) form will be required upon employment. Virginia Driver's license is required or must have the ability to obtain within one year.
