Description MED's Undersea & Electronic Systems Department, is seeking a highly motivated, intellectually curious engineer or scientist to support research, development, and engineering design activities associated with naval platforms, systems and sensor programs. Portsmouth, RI Location.
JOB DESCRIPTION: Principal Engineer, Acoustics, Underwater Transducers and Arrays The position requires a minimum of a Master's degree in Engineering, Physics, or Applied Mathematics and offers the opportunity to join a small specialized team of engineers and scientists operating in a respectful, collaborative and productive work environment. Candidates are expected to have senior-level expertise, including strong theoretical understanding and analytical skills as well as the ability to go \"hands-on\" in a laboratory environment plus at least 10 years of experience in the field of transducer and array design and analysis. Additionally, some familiarity with one or more of the following topics would be desired: structural acoustics, ship acoustics, noise and vibration control, hydro-acoustics, computational modeling of vibro-acoustic problems. The position involves directing and executing a broad spectrum of technical studies encompassing the development of hardware prototypes,
development for production, analytical models from theoretical framework, defining and interpreting computational models, reconciling experimental results to predictions and applying findings and insights to advance the state of the art. The successful candidate for this position will be expected to assume an active leadership role in collaborating with customers and multi-organizational / inner-disciplinary project teams focused on developing solutions for emerging technologies. Support of business development efforts and identifying new growth areas will also be expected.
U.S. Citizenship status is required as this position will need a U.S. Security Clearance within 1 year of start date. Except in rare circumstances, only U.S. citizens are eligible for a security clearance.
Basic Qualifications:
* 10+ years relevant professional experience in field of expertise
* Minimum 3 years of experience with naval ships / systems
* Proficiency with MATLAB
* Advanced skills with one or more numerical modeling tools
* Strong lab experience in development and testing of prototype hardware
* Experience in maturing designs for production readiness
Desired Qualifications:
* PhD in Engineering, Physics, or Applied Mathematics
* Recognized subject matter expertise in underwater acoustic transducers and arrays
* Experience with Navy submarine or surface ship platforms / systems / sensors
* Experience as Principle Investigator or Task Lead role in multi-organizational S&T / R&D projects / programs
* Record of success developing technical proposals and capturing new business
Required Education:
MS in Engineering, Physics, or Applied Mathematics
