Air Products and Chemicals, Inc. (NYSE: APD), a Fortune 500 manufacturer of industrial gases, has an opening for an experienced Commercial Director within its West Region Industrial Gases business.
Reporting to our West Region Vice President, the selected individual will be accountable for leading the sales, marketing as well as the commercial technology functions for a significant area encompassing the western U.S. The position can be a located remotely in the following general metropolitan areas:
* Phoenix, AZ (West Region office location)
* Los Angeles, CA
* Portland, OR
* Seattle, WA
As our Commercial Director, you will be responsible for driving superior commercial performance within the region, delivering results through the collaborative efforts of a team of field and central office-based members. He/she will demonstrate excellence in coaching and mentoring a team that includes - managers of sales teams, marketing and other commercial technology leads, onsite business development managers and senior customer account managers. The Commercial Director will continue to strengthen the regional structure and sales model, build distinctive capabilities among the team people and increase focus and accountability in the region. Primary performance objectives are to deliver revenue growth (signings) through new and existing customers while ensuring high retention/renewal rates and adherence to business rules for pricing, maximize wins on new onsite growth opportunities and continue to build and enhance relationships with strategic customers.
The Director will partner closely with key stakeholders including: Business Managers, Pricing Managers, Central Functions (Logistics, Engineering, Commercial Technology, etc.), Strategic Account Managers, Key Account Managers, collaborating effectively between the regions as required to maximize value for Air Products. The successful candidate will possess outstanding people management skills, critical thinking, executive and field leadership capabilities, exceptional influencing skills and a proven track record of driving growth through his/her people. This is a high-visibility leadership position and provides an outstanding platform for personal and professional growth.
Principal Accountabilities:
1. Develop and execute Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) for the West Region sales organization and for each Sales Territory within, utilizing resources and assets to provide Air Products with competitive advantages
2. Grow profitability and market share through new business development, contract renewal signings and meeting or exceeding pricing targets
3. Co-develop and/or strengthen sales force processes and capabilities across the team, bringing outside experiences and standard methodologies to improve team performance
4. Lead and participate in full life-cycle of sales, including but not limited to: prospecting, pricing, lead generating, presentations, negotiations, in person client meetings, proposal writing, relationship building, closing and account management
5. Maintain an active presence in the field (50%+ the time) mentoring, advising while coaching and developing field team members/ supervisors and building engagement with customers
6. Apply strong cross-functional working knowledge of Engineering, Business Management, Marketing, Commercial Technology, Industry segments, Legal, Operations and Logistics
7. Drive success through a network of teams that include our key management, sales and engineering teams and their global counterparts
Qualifications:
* 5-10 years in a commercial, leadership role in Sales Management, Business Management and/or Marketing Management
* A minimum of 10 years' industrial gases experience with significant time spent in, or in-depth exposure to, the merchant industrial gas business
* Undergraduate degree required; MBA desirable
* Strong leadership, influencing and interpersonal skills
* Demonstrated ability to lead a team of direct reports including managers of people.
* Ability to travel ~50% of the time to coach/develop the sales and commercial technology teams, visit customers and attend internal meetings.
* Ability to work successfully in a matrix environment
