Supports nursing in the delivery of patient care in the Emergency Department. Provides direct patient care, clerical support, order entry, stocking and unit supplies, and patient transportation. Interventions under the direction of RN/MD/PA/NP. May coordinate care in fast track collaborating with provider and Clinical Team Lead. Participates in orientation.
Education or Formal Training
1. High school graduate preferred
2. Medical Terminology class preferred
3. Colorado or National EMT-B certification required, or medical student with Student Privileges required
Special Qualifications (Licensure, Registration, etc.)
1. BLS certification required; suspension occurs if certification expires
2. IV certification required within 90 days, one time only, no expiration
Knowledge, Skill and Ability
1. Ability to effectively communicate to patients, family, and co-workers
2. Basic knowledge of frequently used medical terminologies
3. Knowledge of policies and procedures related to Emergency Department
One year experience preferred in Emergency Department or other acute care hospital setting
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Unit Coordinator role is critical to organization and efficiency of the ED. Specific duties include:
a. Prepare, alphabetize and file paper portion of ED charts for medical records
b. Coordinate with CTL/charge to take biophone calls and receive patients on tracker
c. Coordinate with CTL/charge to call dispatch and transport agencies and notify of advisory or divert status
d. Coordinates with RNs and providers to contact agencies for transport out of facility
e. Communication network-phones, fax, intercom, pagers, pre-hospital reports and police reports
f. Patient log and completion of medical records for ED patients
2. Functions under the direct supervision of the assigned RN or medical provider
a. Tasks as delegated by the RN include but not limited to: stocking, phlebotomy, 12-lead EKG, wound care, dressings etc.
b. May be required to perform point of care testing
c. Initiates IV access according to standards
a. Provides discharge instructions as delegated by RN or providers
b. Updates patients and families of what to expect, and delays
c. Promotes customer service through communication, respect, and education of our patients
d. Documents procedures and pertinent patient information in the medical records
e.?Responsible for orientation of new employees
f.?Responsible for clinical rotation of EMT students
