Reports to: Vice President, Procurement

Benefit Classification: Salary, Exempt

Education Requirements: Four-year Engineering degree and at least eight years of high voltage electrical experience in distribution, substations and transmission or eight years of civil/mechanical engineering experience. Registered Professional Engineering license required and/or in the process of completing.

Position Summary: The Director of Engineering recognizes the importance of providing leadership and mentoring to others within the engineering team. He/she meets and aligns with the owners engineering representatives to enhance overall engineering philosophy.

The Director of Engineering is responsible for managing the engineering program; with an emphasis on electrical and civil engineering. The Director of Engineering recognizes the importance of the three constituents: 1. Success of our client, 2. The success of our employees, and 3. The success of our company. The Director of Engineering must have strong technical knowledge and experience in the technologies used in the engineering industry, be program management and process oriented and is effective at leading people within the team. The Director of Engineering must have strong interpersonal and leadership skills, demonstrate a pragmatic outlook and sound judgment, must accept accountability, have superior problem-solving skills and be flexible to the ever-changing dynamics of the renewable energy business. Acts as a cultural manager by ensuring that the companys fundamental values, beliefs, and design philosophies are followed and maintained. The Director of Engineering ensures that all final engineering products meet client reliability and constructability requirements.

Essential Job Functions


  • Acts as the Company program engineering representative during the owner project definition and estimating phase. As the company program manager, responsibility will include interactions with transmission utility, wind turbine supplier, solar and wind industry manufacturers and equipment providers, to establish long lasting relationships
  • Determines how clients and the renewable energy market are evolving on design tends, philosophy, and criteria on power plant design, Blattner Energy must understand client design criteria and intent.
  • Will travel to Client offices and/or project sites as required to foster client relationships, idea propagation, and problem solving.
  • Builds an understanding of the strategic dynamics that are essential to the current markets of the company.
  • Manages, coordinates and supports engineering activities, making detailed plans to accomplish goals and directing the integration of client and Blattner Energy technical activities. Works with client to ensure Blattner Energy and client understands design standards and philosophies for processes.

Participates in defining the Company engineering and Electrical business plans goals and actions.


  • Develops and facilitates safety standards for the Engineering program and Company.
  • Ensures projects are designed and constructed in compliance with all applicable and prudent industry safety standards including NESC, NEC, and NFPA.
  • Acts as the Electrical subject matter expert (SME) and will support EHA and ESP updates and keep relevant with the Risk Management department.

Recommends and when approved, follows through with identifying training resources, and schedule arrangements for appropriate training.


  • Develops and implements consistent policies, standards, and procedures for the Engineering program management; specifically, regarding engineering design basis utilized by Company. Implements guardrails specific to design philosophy and criteria within Company Program.
  • Stays current on new technologies and industry practices. Seeks opportunities to add value to projects with application of best available technology for specific projects. Performs economic analysis / value engineering to determine cost effective solutions and prepare recommendations to estimating team.
  • Analyzes technology, resource needs, and market demands to plan and assess the feasibility of projects and engineering initiatives.
  • Facilitates creation and maintains library of design basis documents for all segments within Company. Ensures Director of Estimating is current with design basis for client and scope of work prior to the kick-off meeting of estimating new project.
  • Acts as an available resource to the engineering and estimating team(s) during estimating and bid phase.

Acts as a technical resource to support engineering leads review of owner, contractor, and company scopes for completeness, and note gaps or overlaps.


Provides leadership and acts as a subject matter expert for electrical supervisors on assignments with unusual or difficult problems; will also support as necessary with the Directors of Construction with transmission, distribution, collection, and substation contractors on scope issues, best practices, and safety, schedule, and design changes.


  • Acts as a leader in a group of peers and/or subordinates. Must be capable of orchestrating necessary conversations, meetings, presentations, etc.
  • Recruits employees and assigns, directs and evaluates their work, and oversees the development and maintenance of staff competence.
  • Involved with industry forums, committees, boards, and on-going continuous education programs to bring further ideas and innovations back to Company.
  • Must keep licensing and Professional certification(s) for engineering resources up-to-date.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Electric substation, overhead and underground construction and maintenance knowledge.
  • Civil, mechanical, and electrical power engineering principles and familiarity with computer and analytical tools as relate to equipment sizing, load flow and power quality.
  • Self- motivated and works well with others, possesses a positive attitude, has a commitment to work safely, provides quality customer service, creates customer satisfaction and works productively.
  • Up to 50% travel required.
