Interested candidates should apply for the position and view the position description through the Isaacson, Miller link below: /6994 Position Information Position Information Job Posting Number S00676 Position Title Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs Department Office of Academic Affairs-1033 Job Category Staff Posting Position Type Full-Time Position Details As chief academic officer, the Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs reports to the President and oversees the University curriculum and new curricular initiatives; faculty hiring and promotion; support for faculty research and teaching; and the administration of all academic departments and programs (Library, Athletics, Global Studies, Divisional Deans, Registrar??s Office and Institutional Research.) The Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs is a key participant in the University??s budget development and strategic planning, serves as a member of the President??s Cabinet, and, in the President??s absence, is the presiding officer of the University. Core Responsibilities: ACADEMICLEADERSHIP As leader of the Office of Academic Affairs, the Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs must inspire the respect and confidence of the faculty, students, staff and alumni. He/she must be committed to energizing Wesleyan??s distinctive educational experience (see Wesleyan 2020 and Beyond Wesleyan 2020) and at the same time bring a fresh perspective and vision that will help the university achieve its objectives. ACADEMICRECRUITING Working with departments, programs, the Vice President for Equity and Inclusion, and the Deans, the Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs leads the effort to define and fill academic positions with special attention to recruiting and retaining faculty from underrepresented populations. SPOKESPERSONWITHRESPECT TO ACADEMICISSUES: In conjunction with the President, the Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs must have the perspective and objectivity to be a spokesperson for the University??s core academic mission to both internal and external audiences. The Provost will be expected to represent the core academic mission at meetings of the Board of Trustees; to lead internal discussions on academic planning, curriculum development, faculty governance, and other issues related to teaching, scholarship, and faculty development; and to facilitate fundraising efforts. ADMINISTRATIONANDMANAGEMENT Responsible for a budget of approximately $75 million, the Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs must be an effective and proactive manager. In addition to overseeing the academic departments and programs, the Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs also oversees the arts, athletics, community partnerships, international studies, and the library, and must be sensitive to the important contribution these activities make to the Wesleyan experience. In conjunction with the Vice President for Student Affair, the Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs leads the University??s efforts at promoting campus learning. She/he also will be deeply involved in educational activities beyond the campus. Key administrative duties include: Co-chairs the Budget Priorities committee, which advises the University on fiscal matters. Together with the other senior management team members, evaluates budgetary matters, including new money requests, one-time capital allocations, and ongoing efforts to maintain a sustainable economic model for the University as a whole. Is an ex-officio member of the Faculty Compensation and Benefits committee. Manages the faculty compensation budget in the context of the overall budget. On behalf of the President, the Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs oversees (with voice but no vote) the Advisory [faculty personnel] Committee. Is an ex-officio member of the Educational Policy Committee and meets weekly with the chair. Meets with the President regularly to evaluate the effectiveness of all programs in Academic Affairs. As a member of Cabinet, the Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs meets regularly with the senior members of the administration to advise the President and address issues of importance to the University. The Successful Candidate: Must be a recognized and accomplished scholar who can serve the University as a strategic, flexible, and collegial leader. Must possess a demonstrated commitment to excellence in research and teaching and capacity for thinking about and acting in the best interests of the University. Have an appreciation for and understanding of the political, financial, technological, and global challenges facing selective liberal arts colleges and provide effective and innovative leadership in the face of these complexities. Demonstrates impeccable academic judgement. Demonstrates a commitment to diversity, including individual action and institutional leadership to advance diversity and inclusion. Has a powerful affinity for, and commitment to, the mission and values of a liberal arts college. Demonstrates a high degree of integrity paired with a fair, collaborative, and transparent leadership style that will succeed in an environment of shared governance. Minimum Qualifications An earned doctorate or equivalent terminal degree and a record of distinguished scholarship and teaching requisite for an appointment as a tenured full professor. Experience in guiding the implementation of a strategic plan, establishing metrics, measuring progress, and adapting as necessary. An astute understanding of college finances and the relationships between academic priorities and budgeting. A record of appreciating excellence and contributing to the growth and innovation within programs, departments, or schools, and participating in the successful recruitment and retention of a superb and diverse faculty. An ability to build bridges among academic disciplines, and a commitment to facilitating the potential of collaborative activities across institutional and disciplinary boundaries, including both interdisciplinary teaching and research conducted by faculty and students. A track record for helping scholars advance their research, as well as helping facilitate that research through the development of supportive infrastructure. An appreciation for the importance and challenge of maintaining a healthy, productive balance between outstanding scholarship and high-quality teaching. Demonstrated commitment to shared governance in planning and managing change, and the skills to minimize conflict and promote a sense of shared commitment to change. Demonstrated commitment to the education of students, the ability to envision and advance the importance of general education, and a thorough grasp of the significance of lifelong learning.
