The University of Virginia Darden School of Business seeks a Financial Aid Counselor to assist in coordinating and administering federal, state, administration, and institutional financial aid programs for the Darden School of Business. Responsibilities will include a review of financial aid information submitted via the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) & UFAA (University Financial Aid Application), creating financial aid packages, certifying alternative loan applications, reviewing subsequent ISIRs (Institutional Student Information Records) to determine impact on financial assistance and clear students with issues noted in the Student Information System (SIS). The Financial Aid Counselor will provide maintenance to all webpages and will share with the Director the responsibility for monitoring and reporting on key metrics relating to outstanding loan balances, defaults, and other key indicators of private loans on behalf of UVA/Darden School Foundation. This position will assist in providing loan repayment counseling to students preparing to graduate.

Specific duties and responsibilities:

Financial Aid Administration

Complete the verification process of financial information submitted by student financial aid applicants on the FAFSA and UFAA.
Create financial aid award packages in keeping with federal and State regulations, University endowment policies and donor restrictions on over 150 scholarship accounts.
Certify alternative loans in ELM (Electronic Loan Management System) and post awards in the SIS (Student Information System).
Review subsequent Institutional Student Information Records (ISIR) to determine impact on student eligibility.
Assign appropriate communications in SIS based on initial or revised awards.
Clear issues in SIS that impact student eligibility and disbursement of financial assistance.
Conduct yearly surveys regarding student reported expenses to be used in establishing student budgets for financial assistance.
Represent the Darden School to the University Student Financial Services with best interests of both Darden Students and University operation in mind.
Be available to attend all training, help, redesign, and updates on SIS and UBI (the University's Business Intelligence Tool) necessary to operate in the realm of all aspects of University Student Financial Services (both Student Accounts and Financial Aid).

Financial Aid Counseling

Assist and participate in counseling sessions at Day@Darden, Darden Days and orientation sessions.
As needed, conduct individual Entrance Counseling Interviews with newly admitted students.
As needed, conduct Exit Counseling Interviews with students.
As needed, counsel all MBA formats regarding obtaining, maintaining and appeal procedures based on federal, state and institutional regulations.


Run reports and troubleshoot federal and private loan originations and disbursements.
Monitor and report on key metrics relating to outstanding loan balances, defaults, and other key indicators of private loans on behalf of UVA/Darden School Foundation.
Complete various surveys on financial aid data


Maintain the Financial Aid Website and Portals keeping critical information for students current.

Knowledge, skills and abilities:

4-7 years of work experience preferred
Bachelors degree required
Experience in financial aid preferred
Preferred strong and current working knowledge of Title IV financial aid regulations, demonstrate excellent counseling skills and a commitment to student service, and possess a thorough understanding of student loan borrowing and repayment options and processes. This would include working in PeopleSoft Campus Solutions, ImageNow, all federal web programs (i.e. FAA (Financial Aid Administrator) Access to Central Processing System (CPS), and the Common Origination and Disbursement (COD) website) and the Electronic Loan Management (ELM) system.
Proficiency in MS-Office products, database management, report writing and social network outlets.
Ability to function effectively in a team environment, with minimal supervision, to achieve results and meet goals in a service-oriented environment.

Anticipated Hiring Range: $45,000 - $52,000
