Purpose of the Role:

The role is required for the overall management, execution and successful deployment of cabling
infrastructure and professional services associated with 'Data Center White Space'.
The prime focus is America projects and with a strong emphasis on leading the technical and
engineering aspects of EDC-ICE in the region. This includes all aspects of design, engineering and
installation (cabinets, containment, infrastructure cabling) associated with the fit out of data center
white spaces, as well as driving the cabling contractors to ensure that cost, timescale and quality
targets are met.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Represent & lead EDC Infrastructure Cabling Engineering in North America, both internally and
    externally
  • Participate as an active member of the wider EDC Project team
  • Close liaison with key strategic product manufacturers & suppliers
  • Help develop & deliver in conjunction with the London team:
    • Whitespace design from concept to construction level detail & be fully conversant with the design and its subsequent implementation & changes
    • Creation of and assist with, RFP & RFI documentation relating to White Space products and services, including participating in Global RFP initiatives & events
    • Ensure & promote effective project change control
    • Assist with overall project programming
    • Ensure Infrastructure Cabling product and installation is in compliance with local & national
    • AHJ requirements, as well as specific MS and manufacturer installation standards
    • Support the implementation of the Infrastructure Cabling strategic design, installation, testing and best practice framework for the project
    • Provide regular and detailed reports of project progress to the ICE team & wider MS project team, including advance notice of potential issues, issue tracking and resolution, contractor progress and the like
    • Provide other ad hoc project related documentation and reporting as needed
    • Report urgent action items / general reports on a weekly / monthly basis to PM and ICE
      team on progress, issues, decision points taken as required
    • Make informed and if needed executive decisions relating to the installation, including
      ensuring key stake holders are informed and agreement sought as appropriate
      Liaison with internal IT silos, such as Enterprise Compute, Telco & SAN Engineering teams, to ensure, for example, that they understand the overall Whitespace design so appropriate hardware orders can be placed i.e. ensuring that Airflow direction is understood, U heights /spatial restrictions etc.
    • Build working relationship with the Contractor(s), including installation staff (foreman and engineers) and become involved with the contractors programme of works for the days and weeks ahead & provide guidance on installation, good practice and the like
    • Drive the cabling contractor from an early stage to ensure MS aims are met
    • Conduct regular construction site walks (ideally once a day) and / or attend site as required in order to quickly resolve installation issues. Examples of site inspection activities might be;
      • Installation quality and progress checks for space layout, containment, cabling 1st and 2nd fix
      • Site inspections should be carried out independently (planned and un-announced) as well as in conjunction with the contractor and cabling and cabinet manufacturer(s) as required
      • Testing parameters are being adhered to
      • Site visit reports
      • Generate punch lists
      • MOA QA / hand over lists
  • Liaise and work closely with company's manufacturing partners, including participating
    in site visits by the manufacturer conducting tool box talks and delivery of training prior to
    contractor commencement on site in order to ensure installation practice meet their
    warranty requirements etc
  • Verify existing installations in order to prepare accurate documentation for new install /
    confirm database details etc
  • Become fully conversant with the power and environmental monitoring systems that
    *** deploys such as Raritan Power strips and associated software platforms (PowerIQ) and fully assist with QA of those systems as part of the overall Whitespace installation
  • Become fully conversant with the various Database systems that *** utilizes such as Struxtureware, Aperture, Patch Manager and assist with ensuring all relevant data is gathered in order to load relevant data into those systems in order to model the Whitespace, permanent and patching records within the databases
  • Be prepared to design in and update cabling databases (particularly Patch Manager which is
    increasingly used as a design and planning tool)
  • Review and approval of cable test results and As Built information
  • Develop and maintain strong working relationships with EDC North America DC Operations
    Team and other critical facility stakeholders, to ensure a successful hand over from project to
    operations team
  • Assist the BAU operations team generally with operational queries and issues, assist with
    planning of new strategic containment, cabling etc and generally provide expert guidance and
    advice as required

Key Skills:
  • Ideally educated to a degree level, or be able to show equivalent level of education in a relevant
    engineering discipline and / or industry experience such as working up through the Electrical
    trades etc.
  • Ideally BICSI RCDD qualified or working towards the qualification
  • A minimum of 6 years' experience within the Infrastructure Cabling industry, with a minimum of
    3 years specifically delivering complex projects within the financial or other blue chip vertical
    market ideally served within the DC environments
  • Knowledge and experience of and within NY and NJ Electrical / Infrastructure cabling contracting
    sphere would be of particular benefit in order forto build long term relationship / drive best
    value contracts in conjunction with Sourcing
  • Demonstrate clear understanding of Cabling Infrastructure and relevant local, national and
    international standards
  • Experienced in delivering high value, fast track projects within critical operating environments
    that have complex and exacting installation and performance criteria
  • Detailed understanding of current Compute and Networking design and deployment
    methodology
  • Customer focused, sound commercial and financial awareness

  • Ability to research and interpret industry and internal standards to suit project requirements
  • Able to translate client requirements into technical specification
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written
  • Able to establish and manage relationships with internal clients and external vendors / suppliers
  • Expert in the Microsoft Office suite, especially in Visio and Excel
  • A level of AutoCAD competence is strongly preferable
  • Experience with asset and cable management DCIM software platforms would be preferable
  • Experience of Fluke Cable Testers (DSX) and associated Fluke Software
  • Working knowledge of the US TIA Cabling standards
  • Willingness to learn and develop
