CIB - Global Corporate Banking - Director of Development Impact, JPM Development Finance Institution - VP/ED (New York or Washington, DC) Req #: 190055474_1 Location:Washington, DC, US Job Category:Investment Banking Potential Referral Amount: 0 US Dollar (USD) Launching a Development Finance Institution JP Morgan will be creating a Development Finance Institution ( DFI ) within the Corporate and Investment Bank. Our decision to do so is based on the belief that development finance can and should be a core part of J.P. Morgan s offering to clients, and that this can be done on a fully commercial basis. JP Morgan is already actively involved in financing global development, by some measures more so than some of the largest government-owned institutions engaged in development finance. The JP Morgan DFI will position the firm to meet our clients growing demand for advice, financing, and structuring of their investments in the developing world -- investments that have development impact. It will help satisfy the demand of investors for assets with both financial and social returns. And it will facilitate the firm s access to sources of concessional capital, thus creating a blended finance platform , thereby expanding the range of transactions the firm can execute. The DFI team will create and execute a strategy that positions JP Morgan as the pre-eminent commercial institution involved in development finance. Why now? Private capital is essential for meeting development goals. For example, the United Nations estimates that achieving the Sustainable Development Goals by 2030 will require tens of trillions of dollars in investment, far in excess of official sources of funding. Development banks and governments are focused on levering their billions into trillions from the private sector. JP Morgan seeks to partner with our clients, including institutions within the development community, to work towards filling this gap. We have the clients, the capital strength, and the human resources to make a major impact in how development finance is done, and on improving the lives of millions of people in the developing world. Structure JP Morgan s DFI will largely rely on existing banker coverage teams and product desks. We expect that the DFI will launch with four primary functions: JPM DFI Leadership: this includes leading the DFI, its strategy and execution; it will also take responsibility for ensuring the quality of J.P Morgan s development finance standards, forming institutional partnerships (both internal and external) and representing J.P. Morgan s DFI to clients and other external constituencies; Development Impact: this includes defining and maintaining the development criteria that will be applied to the firm s transactions in the developing world in order to qualify for the development portfolio; Development Finance: this includes understanding and accessing products available from public sector development finance institutions and governments, and working with internal deal teams to incorporate those products into JPM transactions. This function will also include supporting the CIB s syndicate desks by building relationships with institutions and other investors that want to support investments that will have development impact; Operational Support: responsibilities include maintaining a deal pipeline, generating marketing and qualifications materials, and assisting both the Development Impact and Development Finance functions The DFI will be housed within the Global Corporate Bank, will report to the Global Head of Public Sector, and will have a Governance Committee comprised of senior JPM stakeholders to assist with strategic direction and management oversight. The DFI will also engage a network of virtual team members from across the firm. Core Responsibilities for the Director of Development Impact: Creating and maintaining the development framework, leveraging research and best practices from established development finance institutions Utilizing the development framework to classify individual transactions for development impact Liaising with issuer and investor clients and JPM product and coverage teams to obtain the necessary inputs for classifying transactions Crafting a narrative around the development impact for qualified deals and socializing the narrative with sales and product teams, issuer and investor clients Monitoring the development portfolio, including liaising with consultants to evaluate the impact of previous projects Incorporating learning from past and current portfolio transactions into the framework and future assessments Staying abreast of the latest research and trends in international development; engaging in relevant dialogue with internal and external audiences, and contributing to thought-leadership Qualifications: 10+ years of professional experience in international development, financial services, management consulting, or related professional/ managerial fields with at least 5 years of experience working in international development Advanced degree in International Development, Economics, or other related fields Subject matter expertise in the field of development economics and/or finance, including a keen understanding of the UN sustainable development goals and development impact monitoring and evaluation Knowledge of banking and capital markets, especially core CIB products and services Experience working with or within public and/or international organizations Structured thinker, with the ability to develop and apply frameworks for complex assessments and analyses Flexibility to travel Ability to navigate across large organizations to get things done and broker information across the firm; ability to form strong partnerships and work in environments where there are multiple, over-lapping stakeholders Personal integrity, initiative and leadership qualities Excellent (English) written and oral communication skills, with the ability to develop and deliver succinct, credible, and persuasive narratives PLEASE NOTE: ALL INTERNAL MOVES WILL NORMALLY TAKE PLACE ON THE SAME GRADE AND SAME SALARY.
